BACKGROUND AND APPROACH

The Challenge: Bridging the Gap

Today, nearly one million young people in the UK are classified as NEET (not in education, employment, or training). This represents a staggering loss of potential. Industry leaders, including the VP of Amazon UK, have noted that the current curriculum often fails to prepare students for the workplace. Without meaningful work experience, young people, particularly those from disadvantaged or diverse backgrounds, face a "confidence deficit" that makes the first step on the career ladder feel impossible.

At Blue Jay, we believe the solution is transformative work experience. We move young people from the column of "welfare" to the column of "work" by treating them as active contributors to their communities, not just students in a classroom.

What We Do: Real Issues, Real Spaces, Real Impact

Blue Jay creates professional environments where young people work alongside experts to deliver high-quality projects and commissions. Our approach focuses on four pillars:

  1. Meaningful Professional Experience: Working on real-world proposals and commissions.

  2. Employability Skills: Developing the "soft skills" employers crave - teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and oracy.

  3. Community Impact: Solving local problems, from energy poverty to social isolation.

  4. Connection: Building networks between young talent and established professionals.

Our Journey & Impact

From our beginnings at the Concord Youth Centre in Sparkbrook, we have consistently connected young people with elite creatives. Partnering with filmmakers like Misba Uddin (Bebi Media) and supported by the West Midlands Police Commission and the National Lottery, we gave young people the tools to tell powerful sports stories using high-end equipment.

Our work has since evolved into vital community services and intergenerational projects. Recently, in partnership with MECC Trust, Khidmat Centre, Hutton Hall, Unity Hubb, and The Hub Hazelwell, Blue Jay has been training the next generation of Energy Advisors.

Participants in our programmes don’t just "shadow", they deliver. They have:

  • Conducted one-to-one advice sessions and home visits to help residents with energy bills.

  • Designed and created educational resources and engaging social media content.

  • Distributed "warm packs" and recommended retrofit energy-saving measures.

  • Navigated the diverse needs of Birmingham’s residents, building the confidence to speak to customers and stakeholders alike.

Our Vision

Rooted in inclusivity and creativity, Blue Jay is a platform for those from all walks of life - including young carers, care leavers, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds - to share their stories and prove their worth.

Supported by partners such as Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), Pannel Croft Retirement Village, and Newbiggin Trust, we are proving that when young people are given the space, the time, and the professional commitment they deserve, they are not just "ready" for work, they are ready to lead.

At Blue Jay, we don’t just tell stories, we create them together. Join us in making a lasting impact.
