Students Find Their Voice Through Podcasting at Digbeth Campus

Updated: Jan 24

At South & City College Birmingham, adult learners studying Level 2 English Functional Skills are discovering the power of their own voices — thanks to the college’s professional podcast suites at the Digbeth campus, right in the heart of Birmingham.

Students have been using the studios to record thought-provoking and insightful conversations on real-world issues, from rising energy prices to the cost-of-living crisis, exploring how people are navigating these challenges in their everyday lives. The stories they share reflect the perspectives of a diverse, international group of learners, many of whom bring a wealth of experience from living and working both in the UK and abroad. Their reflections are honest, thoughtful, and deeply relevant.

Making Assessments Meaningful

This podcast project was developed as an alternative, more engaging way to carry out Speaking and Listening assessments. By connecting assessments to real-life topics, students found the experience more relatable and meaningful. The result? Not only did they complete their assessments, but they also gained new skills, boosted confidence, and experienced a genuine sense of achievement.

“Recording our podcasts made me realise that my experiences and opinions really matter,” one student reflected.

The finished podcasts are compelling, and they showcase the creativity, insight, and voices of the learners — well worth a listen.

Giving Students a Platform

At Blue Jay, we celebrate projects that empower learners to explore their creativity and tackle important issues. This podcast initiative does exactly that: it gives students a genuine voice and a platform to share it.

We look forward to seeing even more learners take advantage of the podcast suites in the future, using them to explore creative ideas, share personal stories, and contribute to conversations that matter.

“Projects like this remind us that education isn’t just about exams — it’s about giving people the confidence and tools to tell their own stories.”
